Speakers

Professor Joanna Moncrieff

Debunking the serotonin theory of depression and the implications for the use of antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs

In this talk, I will look at the serotonin theory of depression, how and why it was developed, how it was disseminated by the pharmaceutical industry with the help of the medical profession, and how it was eventually disproved. I will explain how the serotonin theory is an example of the disease-centred theory of drug action, which is the dominant way of understanding the action of psychiatric drugs. I will present an alternative drug-centred model that highlights how these drugs alter normal mental states and behaviours. I will analyse the evidence for the benefits of antidepressants and consider the implications of the different models for the drug treatment of depression and other psychological conditions.

Joanna Moncrieff is a Professor of Critical and Social Psychiatry at University College London, and works as a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS in London. She researchers and writes about the over-use and misrepresentation of psychiatric drugs and about the history, politics and philosophy of psychiatry more generally. She has been leading UK government-funded research on reducing and discontinuing antipsychotic drug treatment (the RADAR study), and collaborating on various studies to support antidepressant discontinuation. In the 1990s she co-founded the Critical Psychiatry Network to link up with other, like-minded psychiatrists. She is author of numerous papers and her books include A Straight Talking Introduction to Psychiatric Drugs Second edition (PCCS Books), published in September 2020, as well as The Bitterest Pills: The Troubling Story of Antipsychotic Drugs (2013) and The Myth of the Chemical Cure (2009) (Palgrave Macmillan). Preeya Vara

Preeya Vara

Counselling Psychology in Action - Creating a psychologically informed environment in LLamau, a leading Welsh homelessness charity.

Preeya Vara is a Consultant Counselling Psychologist working for Llamau, a leading homelessness charity in Wales. In her role, she leads the strategy to embed psychologically and trauma informed principles in all layers of the organisation, from colleagues training, learning and development to recruitment and policy making to create a Psychologically Informed Environment. Prior to her work in Llamau, she spent 12 years working in for the NHS in a secondary care community mental health team, specialising in trauma therapy.  During the latter stages of her NHS career, she researched and wrote a Trauma Informed training strategy for the health board. Preeya is passionate about amplifying the voices of people from marginalised communities and using co-production to inform strategy development.

Llamau is the leading homelessness charity in Wales, supporting the most vulnerable young people and women. Llamau are particularly well known for working with those most at risk - care leavers, people who have been involved with the criminal justice system, people who have experienced domestic abuse and people who have had chaotic and disadvantaged lifestyles. They need high levels of individual support to help them gain the skills necessary for them to live independent and purposeful lives in their communities. Their aim is to prevent youth homelessness and end the cycle of abuse by providing safe accommodation, mental health support and skills to move on to live a more fulfilling life.

Welsh National Opera

Singing & Breathing

Welsh National Opera will provide information and practical techniques drawn from their innovative singing and breathing programme, Wellness with WNO, developed in partnership with NHS Wales Health Boards to support people with Long COVID in Wales.

Welsh National Opera's Arts, Health and Wellbeing strategy covers social prescribing, hospital and social care, mental health and Dementia support, and they are keen to continue to utilise their skills around participation and community support, to take some of the pressure off front line health services.

One example of this work is their Long COVID programme, Wellness with WNO, which was launched in 2021 with NHS Wales Health Boards. This ongoing online programme was developed with NHS medical professionals and is designed to support people experiencing feelings of breathlessness and anxiety that have continued longer term after the initial symptoms of the COVID-19 virus. Delivered by professional opera singers, it invites participants to explore singing and performing techniques used at Welsh National Opera, with the aim to support improved breath control, lung function, circulation, and posture.

To tell you more about how this is helping people across Wales, WNO's Arts and Health Producer April Heade, Facilitator Kate Woolveridge and Pianist Nicki Rose will share a snapshot of the programme, demonstrating some of the techniques and exercises that have been successful in supporting individuals and their symptoms.

Welsh National Opera believes in the power of opera to transform lives. Building on the Company's 75-year history, their aim is to inspire and empower with music and passion; contribute to the musical, cultural and educational life of the communities they serve across Wales, England and the world.  The Company work with partners to discover and nurture the next generation of talent and provide a springboard for international careers. Touring is their lifeblood and they strive to present the highest quality work across their busy artistic calendar, from big opera performances to orchestral concerts and family shows while all while providing transformative experiences through their youth and community work.

Their engagement programme spans education, youth work, specialist PMLD work, health and wellbeing, social care, skills and training, and supporting emerging young talent. Working with groups from school children to those seeking sanctuary, and from community groups to older people, hospital patients, and those in full time care.
