The ICP-FP originated as a visualisation designed to support an established sexual risk Structured Professional Judgement tool (the Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol).

However, from this prototype it has evolved over the years into a more sophisticated and comprehensive tool, now offering a means of displaying the presence and salience of more 50 psychological factors, in diverse forensic cases.

Key Points:

There is strong evidence that visualisations of complex information can enhance understanding, memory and problem solving in a range of contexts, but little work has been undertaken within forensic/risk assessment.

The rationale for developing a 'synoptic' overview of complex forensic cases will be outlined.  A case will be made for a determinedly non-actuarial approach to act as a complement to other, actuarial tools.

For each factor, ICP is capable of representing presence/absence, degree, uncertainty, mitigation status and salience.  Stages of evolution will be described and illustrated.

The simple interactivity of ICP-FP   means it might potentially be used by forensic practitioners individually or within a team.   Possible uses include:

  • Assessment checklist/aide memoire
  • Antecedent to case formulation
  • Summary of a comprehensive narrative psychology report
  • Framework for multidisciplinary collaboration
  • Aide to supervision
  • Scaffolding for case presentation
  • Planning and monitoring risk mitigation
  • (& Possibly) Structure discussion/enhance engagement with clients

Some of the practical use of ICP-FP will be illustrated, and its utility and limitations demonstrated, using real forensic case examples.

The challenge of developing and assessing the benefits of such an instrument will be detailed.  All participants will learn how to complete and interpret ICPs.

The ICP-FP app will be made available to any delegates who wish to evaluate it and will remain fully functional indefinitely.

Delegates will be able to continue to use and evaluate the tool in their professional roles, and contribute to ongoing improvements and enhancements.
