Prevalence of sleep problems in the UK is estimated to be 6-10% and many members of the public who attend Health and Social Care Services have problems with sleep, whether or not this is the presenting issue. Sleep problems are more likely to be seem in people with physical (and other) health problems (NICE, 2022).

Psychologists across specialisms, and other types of Health Professionals, can intervene to support clients to change their behaviours and to improve their sleep. Improvements in sleep have been proven to lead to improvements in reducing depression, anxiety, chronic pain, and quality of life (Alimoradi et al, 2022) however adherence to CBT-I programmes is variable across client groups (56-86% Agnew et al, 2020)) and can be negatively impacted by other factors in the person's life. This webinar aims to shine a spotlight on what can get in the way of adherence to CBT-I and how we can adjust our work to make it more effective.

This training will raise awareness of how physical health and wider health and social care needs, that our clients present with e.g., condition-management; lifestyle issues etc, can impact on the effectiveness of insomnia interventions. Attendees will learn about adapting CBT-I protocols to take these factors into account and will be able to take time to reflect on this specialist aspect that leads to lower adherence if not addressed within the CBT-I programme.

Target Audience

This webinar is suitable for health and social care professionals who would like to support their clients who experience insomnia, and who need to be able to adapt to the needs of their clients to reduce the negative impact of sleep deprivation on their presenting issues.

This webinar is particularly suited to practitioners who have noticed that client adherence impacts the effectiveness of CBT-I interventions and are motivated to adjust their approach to take into account barriers to behaviour change, such as physical health symptoms, behaviours and lifestyles that may get in the way of effective use of the CBT-I protocol.

As this webinar will not focus on introducing sleep problems and assessing insomnia, it would be helpful for attendees to have an awareness of the importance of sleep, have an understanding of what insomnia is and when to refer to medical professionals.

Learners from all areas of psychology may find this webinar useful, in particular those working in clinical, coaching counselling, educational, forensic, health, neuro, occupational, sport and exercise psychology, as well as those working in wider workforce roles.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this two-hour webinar, participants will:

  • Understand and be able to explain the importance of the wider context(s) of a client's insomnia.
  • Be able to identify barriers & build motivation to change and maintain sleep behaviours
  • Have the knowledge of how to tailor your CBT-I interventions according to individual needs to reduce barriers and increase adherence to effective sleep behaviours
