Criticism and challenge is often made towards qualitative research that any findings from such an approach lack validity, reliability and generalisability.
This webinar will present qualitative research as a completely different approach to research and explain how such terms are unhelpful for us as psychologists.
Who is the Event For?
This event is for those interested in understanding the key principles in psychological research, such as 'validity' and 'reliability' and considering how these relate to qualitative research.
The course will the history of qualitative research in psychology and discuss how it may have been marginalised. By the end of the webinar, you will:
- Understand and be able to explain qualitative research methods
- Understand and be able to explain some epistemological and political debates within qualitative research
- Understand some of the key principles such as 'validity' and 'reliability', and how these relate to qualitative research
- Be enabled to reflect on broader aims regarding the analysis of qualitative research data

Speaker: Dr Gavin Morgan
Dr Morgan is an educational psychologist at University College London, where he is an assistant professor across the DECPsy Professional Doctorate, and the CPD DEdPsy Doctorate, he has been in post at UCL since 2008. He has a specialism for qualitative research methods at UCL.
He also has a role of Senior Educational Psychologist in Northamptonshire where he has been since 2017; previously Dr Morgan was a Senior Educational Psychologist in Cambridgeshire, for over 12 years.
Dr Morgan has a Doctorate in Educational Psychology, and an MEd in Professional Training in Educational Psychology both from the University of Bristol; a PGCE from the University of Leicester, and a BSc (Hons) Psychology. He has worked as an Educational Psychologist with local authorities since 1999, prior to this, he was a school-teacher.
Dr Morgan is the sole or joint author of a number of articles in professional journals, and has presented his research at a number of professional conferences. He is also currently the chair of the British Psychological Society's Division of Educational and Child Psychology, and has been an elected committee member for the past decade; having also been chair in 2019.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr Morgan has been a member of SPi-B (the Scientific Pandemic Insights Group on Behaviour), advising the Government on issues relating to education, psychology and implications for child development and mental health.
