Does peer mediation affect the emotional literacy of peer mediators?

Author: Corrinne Twomey

Peer based interventions have mixed effects on pupils' emotional literacy.

Of the eleven studies considered three concluded the intervention did not result in positive gains, of the remaining eight, three resulted in mixed findings.

Five of the eleven positively affected participants: four of the 5 studies involved a peer mediation programme.

The outcome measures incorporated into peer mediation studies focus on social skills and the empathy element of the emotional literacy dimensions.

Future investigations should consider the effects of peer based interventions by specifically measuring outcomes against all five emotional literacy dimensions (as classified by Goleman 1998).
