Health psychology is a powerful tool that not only changes individual lives but also enhances public health outcomes at a community level. By understanding and addressing the psychological factors influencing health behaviours, we can create a healthier, more informed society. This is why psychology matters—it transforms lives and fosters a holistic approach to health that benefits everyone.
Tell us about the impact of your own work in psychology
In my work as a health psychologist, I've witnessed firsthand how addressing the psychological aspects of health and wellbeing can transform lives. Having worked in social care for a number of years I saw the benefit of a health psychology approach when supporting people in the community in rehabilitation. Often where they would not sit within a specific psychology mental health service but would still benefit from psychology intervention to support them at a home, and to stay at home, rather than return to hospital or other care service.
Another impactful moment was when I conducted workshops focused on stress management for healthcare workers. Witnessing the immediate relief and camaraderie among participants as they learned relaxation techniques and shared their experiences reinforced the importance of mental wellbeing in high-stress environments. The gratitude expressed by attendees was a powerful reminder of how psychology can foster resilience and community.
"Ultimately, the impact of my work is profound. It feels fulfilling to empower individuals to take control of their health and well-being, knowing that I'm contributing to a healthier society. Each success story fuels my passion for psychology, reinforcing its vital role in making a positive difference in people's lives."
What makes you proud about working in psychology?
I'm proud to work in psychology because of its transformative power.
I love helping individuals uncover the roots of their struggles, enabling them to take charge of their mental and physical health. Seeing someone shift from feeling overwhelmed to empowered is incredibly fulfilling.
I take pride in teaching psychological tools and techniques to staff. Building a psychological mindful workforce is incredibly humbling and builds on systemic approaches to prevention and care.
I'm proud to contribute to the growing recognition of the link between physical and mental health and the support for others to prioritise their wellbeing in a world where it is often hard to do.
Ultimately, the ability to enhance peoples understanding of themselves and others is what makes my work in psychology so fulfilling. It's about making a difference!
